Sara

Hi, my name is Sara Moffat. I work with David on the weblog and on the campaign, so you may be seeing quite a bit of me around.

I was born in Pullman, Washington, while my parents were going to college at Washington State University. After graduating with a degree in Geology my father got a job at McDonald’s then joined the National Guard. He finally decided that graduate school was a better idea and moved to Golden, Colorado where he attended the Colorado School of Mines and earned his Masters and Ph.D. In the process, he dragged us—my mom, brother, sister and I—to every known National Park in the Rockies and beyond…to look at rocks. Despite myself—whose favorite quote while younger was “it’s old, it’s dead”—I developed a great appreciation for the western outdoors and, yes, rocks.

After being “laid off” from working at a nuclear power plant, Rocky Flats, because, after lowering clean-up standards they had no use for Hydrological Engineers to assess the quality of water, my dad got a job with the United States Geological Survey, which transferred him a few years later to Las Vegas. There I attended high school. Being raised to love all things academic, I quickly became involved in several clubs and was the captain of the debate team and president of the math club before I graduated. Sadly, my siblings are following suit with my sister active in the math club and varsity quiz, my brother the star of all of his advanced classes, and both siblings very fond of Dungeons and Dragons. I graduated from high school, got the Millennium Scholarship and wanted to move as far away from my family as possible as all graduates do, so I came to the University of Nevada, Reno.

I quickly fell in love with Northern Nevada because, of all things, the rocks…and the seasons I missed so much in Vegas. I also fell in love with a sweet guy from Carson City, also attending UNR, and we got married this past July. I am still involved in a love-hate relationship with debate on campus and I am working on my undergraduate thesis this year. I plan on graduating in May 2006; “plan” being the key word.
